Question 1 of 10
1. Question
[기출] 2023 1-1 심영독1 기출
If you ask most people, they will tell you that academic essay writing and creative writing are two utterly distinct crafts. Creative writing, by definition, involves being “creative”—making things up and letting your imagination run wild—while academic essays are about being factual and objective in order to enhance the reader’s knowledge. But these two very different kinds of writing actually have a few similarities. Above all, they are both meant to be read by other people, and that means they need to maintain the reader’s interest. The following are some techniques generally associated with creative writing that you can apply to your essays in order to make ⓐthem more intriguing for the reader.
With creative writing, your reader is your most important consideration, and you need to know and understand whom you are writing for if you are to do a good job of keeping them interested. In most cases, because your teachers and lecturers are going to mark a lot of essays, they may well be bored by the time they get to yours. As they are probably going to be rushing in order to get through all those essays, they will not have time to reread badly written passages, so you need to make your writing succinct, interesting, and easy to read.
The three-act structure is used extensively in modern writing, including writing for movies and dramas. Although these “acts” are not as distinct as acts in a play, they can be thought of as dividing the plot into three parts: a setup, a confrontation, and a resolution. A setup establishes the characters. Within this first “act,” a dramatic occurrence involving the main character called an “inciting incident” takes place. The character tries to deal with it, but his or her actions result in another dramatic occurrence called a “turning point,” which sets the scene for the rest of the story and becomes the major problem, or “confrontation,” that the main character attempts to solve in the second “act.” In a murder mystery, for example, this second act would involve the detective trying to solve the murder case. The main character—with the help of supporting characters—undergoes ⓑa journey during this second act and develops his or her knowledge or skills to a sufficient degree to be able to overcome the problem. The third “act” includes the story’s climax, in which the drama reaches its peak and the problem is overcome, and the resolution, in which all of the loose ends are tied up.
The three-act structure sounds good for made-up stories, but what does it have to do with academic essay writing? Applying this structure to an essay gives you something like the following. The setup is your introduction. It sets the scene and establishes the topic of your essay. The “inciting incident” could be the introduction of evidence that contradicts a common theory, or the highlighting of a primary disagreement in how something is interpreted. The confrontation is a discussion of the different problems surrounding the topic you are writing about. You develop the argument using various pieces of evidence, moving towards an overall conclusion. Finally, this conclusion is like a story’s resolution. You summarize the argument and give your own opinion, having weighed the evidence you have discussed. Using this structure keeps you focused on the primary point because everything you write helps you work towards resolving your argument.
Another useful creative writing tip is to use an attention-grabbing opening. In a murder mystery, for instance, the writer might skip a slow buildup and instead use the murder itself to form the opening of the novel, with the rest of the story charting the efforts of the detective to uncover the perpetrator and perhaps telling the events prior to the murder in a series of flashbacks. The same principle can be applied to essays.
Let’s say you were writing about how the First World War started. An attention-grabbing opening might cite some statistics about the number of men involved and killed rather than building up slowly with the various factors. Then, to introduce the purpose of the essay and launch into ⓒyour argument about what started the war, something like “It seems hard to imagine that all this began with…” can be used, which will allow you to maintain the reader’s interest.
Creative writing often makes use of extended metaphors. A case in point is the passage in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in which Romeo says, “It is the East, and Juliet is the Sun!” In essay writing, rather than battling on with trying to explain a complex concept in a literal and highly detailed way, it might be easier to convey the meaning by drawing comparisons that will help readers to visualize concepts with which they are unfamiliar.
Another way of keeping your reader interested is to bring your essay to life with details about setting and location, just as creative writers do. This may not work quite so well for a scientific essay, but it is certainly relevant for some humanities subjects, in particular literature, history, and archaeology. For instance, a person writing an essay about the Roman emperor Augustus could explain that he preferred a modest lifestyle by writing, “Suetonius, a historian of Rome, mentions his low bed and the coarse food he ate, and the relatively small and meager remains of his house on ⓓthe Palatine Hill in Rome.”
Once you have written a first draft, read through it and think about whether the order of your points is optimal and whether what you have written actually makes sense. After you have finished editing, read through your essay one last time and check that you are satisfied with the wording, and do not forget to proofread to ensure that your spelling and grammar are impeccable.
As you can see, there are more similarities between these two apparently unrelated kinds of writing than you might have thought. It is, of course, possible to go too far with the creative writing idea while writing academic essays. ⓔLiterary devices are not always appropriate, and your essays still need to retain objectivity and must conform to the more formal conventions of academic writing. But there are certainly techniques to be borrowed from creative writing that will help your essays stand out from the crowd and give your teacher or lecturer a welcome break from the monotony of marking numerous essays.

4. 글 (B)의 내용으로 보아 글 (A)의 빈 칸에 들어갈 말로 가장 알맞은 것을 고르시오. [7점]
(A) The initial case, or index patient, was reported in December 2013. An 18-month-old boy from a small village in Guinea is believed to have been infected by ___________. After five additional cases of fatal diarrhea occurred in that area, an official medical alert was issued on January 24, 2014, to the district health officials. The Ebola virus soon spread to Guinea’s capital city of Conakry, and on March 13, 2014, the Ministry of Health in Guinea issued an alert for an unidentified illness. Shortly after, the Pasteur Institute in France confirmed the illness as EVD caused by Zaire ebolavirus. On March 23, 2014, with 49 confirmed cases and 29 deaths, the WHO officially declared an outbreak of EVD.
(B) The virus is typically spread by direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected human or other primate, although it is believed that fruit bats are the virus’s natural host, as they can spread the virus without being affected by it. In order to control outbreaks, medical services need to be highly coordinated. [기출] 2019 2-1 중간 영어1
(A)
A little black thing among the snow,
Crying “‘weep! ‘weep!” in notes of woe!
Where are thy father and mother? Say!-
They are both gone up to the church to pray.
ⓐBecause I was happy upon the heath,
And smiled among the winter’s snow,
ⓑThey clothed me in the clothes of death,
ⓒAnd taught me to sing the notes of woe.
And because I am happy and dance and sing,
ⓓThey think they have done me no injury,
ⓔAnd are gone to praise God and his priest and king,
Who make up a heaven of our misery.
(B)
When my mother died I was very young,
And my father sold me while yet my tongue
Could scarcely cry ‘weep! ‘weep! ‘weep! ‘weep!
So your chimneys I sweep, and in soot I sleep.
There’s little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head,
That curled ⓕlike a lamb’s back, was shaved: so I said,
“Hush, Tom! never mind it, for when your head’s bare,
You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair.”
And so he was quiet; and that very night,
As Tom was a-sleeping, he had such a sight, —
That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, and Jack,
Were all of them locked up in coffins of black.
And by came an angel who had a bright key,
And he opened the coffins and set them all free;
Then down a green plain leaping, laughing, they run,
And wash in a river, and shine in the sun.
Then naked and white, all their bags left behind,
They rise upon clouds and sport in the wind;
And the angel told Tom, if he’d be a good boy,
He’d have God for his father, and never want joy.
And so Tom awoke; and we rose in the dark,
And got with our bags and our brushes to work.
Though the morning was cold, Tom was happy and warm;
So if all do their duty they need not fear harm.

Question 10 of 10
10. Question
10. 작가가 당시 교회와 사회의 지도층에게 할 조언으로 가장 적절한 것은? [13점]
① It is easy to tell disparity exists in this society, but hard to get rid of it. You are responsible for injustice, so repent for what you have done. You have to unite people and give them one single goal to achieve. With your help, people will make heaven and respect aristocratism. This way, your heinous sin will be forgiven.
② There once was a king and he was the ruler of a nation with disparate groups of people. Not to mention conflicts, riots happened every night. Do you know how he managed the situation and kept his throne? He let other countries invade his land so that people get together as one. Do you like this malicious and misguided strategy?
③ Your way of governing lacks dispassion. While you stay at your prayer room, thousands people suffer from poverty and famine. We deserve food and a cozy place just like you. Where did this difference come from? Why are we exploited and oppressed? We want to be free from shackles of bondage. I ask for dispassion, so please respect us as your companion and let us be faithful party-liners just like you.
④ This society is full of mistreatment. Where are children? They are in dirty chimneys working all day long. My disparagement is fair and just. You might think you are the one who has achieved all this glory, but actually it is not true at all. Your greed sacrificed innocent people and it is time to take care of them. With your power and capability, educate children and improve social welfare system.
⑤ You are dispassionate and you think of this value as your asset. It once was, but not anymore. Have some respect and sympathy. They are dying and you are doing nothing more than abusing them. Their destitute and miserable life can be changed if you educate them. Rational thought cannot be valued more than affection and sympathy. Also, distortion of Christian belief needs to be prohibited.CorrectIncorrect
